Leading Lady and Loving Moments Partner with ROSE to Support Health Equity through Breastfeeding

We love celebrating National Breastfeeding Month for many reasons:

  • We get to join the nationwide community to champion moms as they give their babies the best start in life.
  • We get to highlight the phenomenal benefits of breastfeeding that support the health of babies (for their entire lifetime) and mothers.
  • We get to support new moms with our annual nursing bra donation program to make breastfeeding a little easier and more comfortable.
  • And we get to partner with organizations who work 365 days a year to improve the state of breastfeeding among all demographics.

All of these aspects of National Breastfeeding Month are a tremendous celebration and opportunity – and we love it!

Leading Lady and Loving Moments Partner with ROSE to Support Health Equity through BreastfeedingWe’re proud to partner with Reaching Our Sisters Everywhere (ROSE) on their mission: “to address breastfeeding disparities to improve health equity among people of color nationwide through culturally competent training, education, advocacy, and support. With a focus on increasing breastfeeding initiation and duration rates, ROSE seeks to normalize breastfeeding by providing resources and networking opportunities for individuals and communities.

ROSE seeks to enhance, encourage, support, promote, and protect breastfeeding throughout the USA, by working to reduce the breastfeeding disparities among African American women, and to strengthen the health of their babies and families through, mentoring, training, breastfeeding support groups, social support, outreach, education, legislation, health policies, and social marketing.”

Their member network approach empowers community transformers to advocate for breastfeeding among grassroots breastfeeding groups, faith-based breastfeeding outreach and cultural breastfeeding coalitions. To support their goals this year, Leading Lady and Loving Moments are donating $13,000 in nursing bras to ROSE.

Each year ROSE hosts a Breastfeeding Summit to discuss, inform and initiate change regarding a variety of vital breastfeeding themes. Leading Lady and Loving Moments is a proud sponsor of this year’s Summit in New Orleans, LA and we are pleased that some of our nursing bras will be shared with participants to take home to their communities and to local moms in NOLA.

In addition, ROSE is hitting the road with their blueprint project to take a deep dive into the state of breastfeeding in African American communities across the nation. As they meet with mothers nationwide to assess the barriers to success and work towards improved breastfeeding rates, ROSE will distribute nursing bras to moms who need a little extra support to meet their goals.

We are thrilled to be part of ROSE’s mission and help moms who need it most. Every mom deserves the best health for her baby and we know that begins with breastfeeding. With the right support, every mom can achieve success.

Breast Milk is the Answer! A Breastfeeding Q&A with Semone

Creating change in the world starts with one mom vowing to make a difference. And you don’t have to be a world leader to do it. You can make decisions for your family that will affect your child’s entire life, like breastfeeding. From there, you are creating change in your community by normalizing and rejuvenating a passion for the natural loving nourishing act of breastfeeding. If enough moms take this step, the world will be a better place for the future of our children.

Semone, one of the gorgeous models from Reaching Our Sisters Everywhere (ROSE), reminds us how breast milk is the answer:

Breast Milk is the Answer! A Breastfeeding Q&A with Semone

1) Why are you passionate about the breastfeeding cause?

I want every mother to know that she was created to nourish her baby.  All of us mothers have just what our children need.  It is important that we start our children off right and give them the best we have to offer.  Everyone is so concerned about a child being spoiled.  Well I say let us spoil them with breastfeeding love.  I also believe that breastfeeding can help diminish some of these diseases we come across.  Breast milk is the answer!

2) What is your most cherished breastfeeding moment?

I cherish looking into my child’s eyes and s/he looking into mine.  When my wonderfully, created baby boy and girl look up at me, we are in another world.  That bond is something so special.

3) What do you hope for the future of breastfeeding among African American communities?

I hope and pray that more moms everywhere will realize that it does not matter status, class, background, etc., but you as a mother can breastfeed.  It is better for your baby and you can do it.  Wear your baby if you have to, like you rock your attire.  Be just as confident in breastfeeding as you are in sporting that afro – no one thought that would make a comeback.  Breastfeeding is not a fad, but a way of living better.

Ultimate World Breastfeeding Week Partner Spotlight: Reaching Our Sisters Everywhere (ROSE)

We are ecstatic to embrace ROSE as one of our breastfeeding support organization partners in our Ultimate World Breastfeeding Week program!  ROSE does incredible work on the community level to help moms achieve success in breastfeeding.  Find out more about their goals and advocacy strategy here:

Reaching Our Sisters Everywhere (ROSE) is a member network that was founded to address breastfeeding disparities among people of color nationwide through culturally competent training, education, advocacy, and support. With a focus on increasing breastfeeding initiation and duration rates, ROSE seeks to normalize breastfeeding by serving as a catalyst that provides resources and networking opportunities for individuals and communities.

Our efforts to empower a growing cadre of advocacy-oriented “ROSE Community Transformers” top the list in our strategic direction to addressing breastfeeding inequities. ROSE Community Transformers are women with a vested interest to provide peer breastfeeding support to families within their communities. The concept of our Community Transformers resonates from the importance and impact that peer-to-peer support can have on the breastfeeding initiation and duration rates in our communities, a notion reiterated in The Surgeon General’s Call to Action to Support Breastfeeding and strategy 4 of The CDC Guide to Strategies to Support Breastfeeding Mothers and Babies. ROSE strongly believes that a concerned and passionate individual can have an impact within their community.

Through the partnerships and support from the W.K. Kellogg Foundation, Boston Medical Center CHAMPS project, National Association of City and County Health Officials (NACCHO), Georgia Health Foundation, and the Office on Women’s Health It’s Only Natural Campaign, ROSE has been able to train and mentor a total of 162 women as Community Transformers in Alabama, Delaware, Florida, Georgia, Louisiana, Mississippi, Tennessee, Missouri, and New Jersey. As well as improve access to breastfeeding resources in the African American Community and reform health care through breastfeeding.
