Come on, who doesn’t love cheese? Fondue parties are the best way to invite the girls over, eat delicious foods, and have a great time! Pick out your favorite cheeses and your sides, and get to melting and dipping!

 Movie Night in the Living Room

Have a movie night! Snuggle up in the comfy clothes, grab your favorite margarita mix, call the girls over, and put on one of your favorite movies. This is a great way to kick back and relax while laughing and having a good time with friends.

 At-Home Spa

Pamper yourself and your friends with an at-home spa! Although this may seem like something you would do when you were younger, an at-home spa with your girls can still be a blast. What’s better than having the chance to spoil yourself and have a laugh or two with some friends? Paint your toes, take turns giving each other massages, indulge in a fancy facial mask, and of course, don’t forget the wine!

 Sleepover with the Kids

When was the last time you had a sleepover with your friends? High school? Middle School? It’s never too late to reclaim your inner child and plan a sleepover with the girls! If you want to have a little more fun, bring the kids along! While the kids play you’ll have your time with the girls. When the night is over, pull out the sleeping bags and watch a fun movie with the kids. Then in the morning let the fun continue by making breakfast!

Life as a Single ParentFor whatever reason, you find yourself taking on the roles of being both mom and dad to your child. It can be a challenging position to overtake, especially if you are your only support system. Being a single parent, nonetheless, married and having the support of the other parent, means you must put your needs aside, and put all your efforts towards giving your child the best possible life you can offer them. We are in no way saying spend every penny you have to make them happy, but instead shower them with love and compassion as those are two very important qualities to instill on their cute little brains.

Life is notorious for throwing us curve-balls, and if you find yourself being the only outlet and means to your child’s future, the feeling can be extremely overwhelming. Although your responsibilities may have doubled, and the journey that awaits you will have its bumps, remember that when life gives us a curve-ball there is always a possibility of a grand slam. Today we are going to share some helpful tips to overcome some of the obstacles single parents may face:

Tip #1: “A Bad Attitude Won’t Get You Anyway!”

Being a single parent won’t be easy. It’s a constant emotional roller coaster that will have you at times so exhausted you might not know what to do. Take a breath, count to ten, and know everything is going to be okay! Even though you’re the head of the house and the one making all the decisions just remember that even though you might be alone raising your child, it’s still an awesome experience teaching and watching them grow up. Keeping a good attitude will not only keep you from feeling stressed, but it will also help improve your child’s attitude as well. When they see mommy happy, they will be happy.

A huge helpful hint is to never talk about your ex in a negative manner. A positive attitude is a healthy attitude, and something you should model for your child. If they occasionally bring up the missing parent try and keep it short and simple. Don’t dwell on the past and crush your child’s persona of their parents. Even though it might hurt you, you’re child had nothing to do with the past and whatever decision was made. Talking bad about your ex in front of your child is irresponsible and nothing good will come out of it.

Tip #2: Learn to Multi-task

You’ll become a pro at multitasking in no time. Learning how to make dinner, pack school lunches, and settle a meltdown will be so much easier to tackle in time. The key to this is practice. Learn how to practice patience and find the best ways to handle certain situations, like your child not wanting to eat what you made for breakfast when you have to get ready for work and ironing to get done. Make a schedule and a routine for them to follow daily. This way you’re always prepared and they always know what to expect.

Don’t burn yourself out with a million projects. Get done what you need to get done and then move onto another. Things will be a little difficult at first when your child is a baby and a toddler, but once they get a little older, and can take care of themselves things will get better. A fun thing to do when you have a bunch on your plate, and your child is having a meltdown, is to try and come up with a game to keep them preoccupied. For instance, if you’re folding laundry or making dinner try involving them into the process. Talk about shapes and colors and different foods. This will make things go a little smoother.

Tip #3: Find a Work Schedule that Works for You and Your Family

If you have a family member or friend who is able to pick up your child from daycare, school, sports practices, etc. that’s awesome! But if you’re not so lucky, try talking to your boss about a different work schedule. If you’re able to come in an hour earlier, work on your lunch break, or maybe take some of your work home with you, don’t be afraid to ask. Your child is your main priority and nine times out of ten your boss will understand.

Tip #4: Somethings You Can’t Control

Although you’ve mastered to ease the meltdowns and have finally found a schedule that works for everyone, realize not everything can be controlled with effort. Extra expenses are going to come up when your child is in school and they need field trip forms signed, sports registration payed for, camps, etc. Child support will help with the basic necessities, but much will come from you. Don’t stress yourself out over the little things. Learn to live within your means. Life will be a lot more comfortable and happy that way.

If your ex neglects your child remember it is their loss, not yours! Again, don’t stress over things you cannot change. Giving your child with love and stability is the best thing you can do for them. One day they will recognize your efforts and what is really right in the end.

Tip #5: Be Proud of Yourself!

Last but not least, don’t forget to be proud of all your accomplishments. While it can be a stressful road raising your child all by yourself, trust that you are giving it your all as a parent. Being a single parent isn’t an easy task, and at times you may be the only one there to give yourself a high-five when you’ve mastered a milestone with your child. Be proud when you reach limits you didn’t think possible because you will get there. When you believe you can achieve.

The annual World Breastfeeding Week started this past Saturday, August 1st! The world celebration of breastfeeding has occurred every year since 1991, when the World Alliance for Breastfeeding Action (WABA) was formed. This week long event encourages women to embrace their motherly attributes and praise their abilities to give their children the essential nutrients they need to grow up healthy and strong!

We’ve all heard about the benefits breastfeeding has for both mom and baby, but did you know breast milk is constantly changing to meet the needs of our children? Researchers and moms are continuously finding ways breastfeeding is better and better, and how it out wins formula every single time. Breast milk gives our children the best possible nutrients and protection. Moms who breastfeed are shown to have lower risks of cancers, high blood pressure, osteoporosis, etc., and babies who drink breast milk are given immediate and long term protection and have a lower risk of infections, obesity, and cancers. What’s even more amazing about the power of breast milk is it can alter its self to meet a baby’s needs. When a baby breastfeeds their saliva communicates with the mother’s body and their breast milk can give the baby anything they need at that time. If they are sick the milk will produce extra antibodies and antioxidants to help them recover and feel better. Same goes if the mother is sick!

During this week, August 1st to the 7th, organizations such as, La Leche League and WIC (Women, Infant, and Children) are hosting special events for breastfeeding moms and their babies. This year’s theme: Breastfeeding at Work: Let’s Make it Work! will be all about women who want to continue breastfeeding while they pursue their careers. A few spotlighted events are Camden County, NJ, who will be hosting their “Big Latch On” affair where global counts of mothers simultaneously nurse their babies for one minute, and in Caldwell, ID where the Southwest District Health WIC has their “Latch On” event, which this year will be a full day of giving breastfeeding mom’s tips on how to tie both breastfeeding and work together!

 

Find your local chapter near you and checkout all the excitement going on this week and celebrate breastfeeding as it should be: loving, nurturing, and supportive!

Every mom knows squeezing in the time for a workout can be, needless to say, almost impossible. If you’re the type to get up at 5 a.m., or sooner, than I solute you not be like the most of us who love every second of extra sleep we can get. It’s hard balancing cleaning the house, work, packing school lunches, making dinner, and at least getting in thirty minutes of cardio into your day. Many of us have good intentions and pump ourselves up all morning and into our day at work and then when we get home we realize there is no food in the fridge or one of the kids is bored and continues to nag you until bedtime. Do you see where I’m getting at? Sometimes things don’t always go as planned, and when you think you’re going to be good and workout once you get home it just doesn’t seem to happen. However, when we keep pushing your workouts aside your health is also being pushed aside as well.

Yes, you’ve heard all about how incorporating fitness into your daily routine is great for your health. You’ll be happier, you’ll feel better, you’ll have more energy, etc. But what about time? Isn’t that the biggest issue? Well we’re here to help! Today we are not only going to talk about the importance of living a fit and healthy life, but also the efficient way to incorporate workouts into your routine.

To be fit, but more importantly, healthy, you have to want it. Plain and simple. There are thousands and thousands of articles out there that have wonderful workout and diet plans that can fit perfectly into your daily life, but you will never be able to fully stick with it unless you are determined for life. Note that I didn’t say for the week, or for the month, or for the year, but for LIFE. Being healthy is a life decision that you cannot just change after you’re workout plan is finished. You have to want it for life, for your health, for your family, and for yourself. You can do it.

Being a fit mom takes time and energy. It starts off with eating healthier and taking care of your body and mind so in return you have more energy and feel more positive. You’ll need to control your cravings and stay away from eating large amounts of sweets and fried food throughout the week. These changes will not be easy at first. You will give up every now and then, binge eat, and feel sorry for yourself, but that’s okay because you’re human. The real bravery and courage comes from not backing down and admitting to your mistakes and encouraging yourself not to give up again. You can do it. Every mom can be the fit mom she wants to be.

Once you’ve decided this is what you really want you’ll need to set goals. Start doing small at-home workouts in the morning when you wake up and once you get home from work. These could be anywhere from 5-20 minutes long.

If you set goals for yourself and really push yourself to meet them, you’ll have no problem with finding time during your day to workout. You’ll realize you’re able to do more, lift more weight, run longer, etc. If time is still an issue, try getting your whole family involved in the new healthy lifestyle. One idea is to trade time with your husband or partner so one can watch the kids while the other does their workout. Another is to try and get up a little earlier and do a workout video, go for a run, or a bike ride. It’s easier to do this with a partner so encourage your significant other to do it with you.

A few major issues women have when they begin working out are not feeling confident in themselves or feeling guilty for taking away time from their family to workout. If you’re not feeling confident in your skin this is exactly the reason why you should start living a healthier life style. You’ll be a stronger and happier you once you love the skin your in. At first working out will be intimidating, especially if you going to the gym or taking classes. This feeling will pass but it will take some time. Don’t give up just because you see another women who might have a better body than yours or who can lift more weights than you because just remember that’s not how she has always looked or how much she could lift. Everyone starts off somewhere. A great way to feel better about yourself is to join a women’s group fitness class. Women who empower one another to make themselves feel great is an amazing experience. You’ll gain new friends and you’ll all be working towards a similar goal while you motivate each other on the way!

If you’re feeling guilty about wanting to workout, don’t. Taking the time to do something for yourself is not selfish at all. Everyone needs a hobby and their own personal space sometimes. Taking an hour or more out of your day to help improve your health is definitely not something you should feel guilty about. Your family should be there to encourage you and support your journey to be a healthier you. Once you get there you’ll find you’ll be able to spend even more time with them once you have more energy and a better attitude!

Finding time to workout has many elements you’ll need to overcome. You need to want it and be determined to meet goals and know this isn’t a temporary decision, but a life changing one. It’s okay to make mistakes and cheat every once in a while, and try not to be self-conscious or intimidated at the gym. Everyone has to start somewhere. You can do it if you set your mind to it. Every mom is capable and deserving of reaching her goal weight and happiness.

Breastfeeding at Work, the Importance of Self-Care

If you’re working full-time you are spending forty hours or more at the office a week. Add on being a full-time mommy, and keeping up with your breastfeeding schedule. You have a lot going on. No denial about it. As a mother breastfeeding your child, it’s important for you to take the time to treat yourself right. While back at the work you might become forgetful and get caught up in material you had missed while gone. You might forget to eat lunch or take a break, but it’s very significant for women who are breastfeeding to relax and stay healthy; although, it seems like a hard thing to do.

Taking care of your body is just as important regardless if you are breastfeeding or not, but working mommas know stress can build up when you have a million and one things you need to take care of in one day. Following our previous post, “Is Your Workplace Breastfeeding Friendly?” you already know what questions to ask your workplace about your breastfeeding needs. You should be well prepared and ready to go. Now, take in consideration your time at work and what you need to do to be the best mom you can be to your baby, and also, the best YOU you can be. Here are some tips you can use to stay on top of you game while breastfeeding and staying a healthy momma as well:

  1. Make a priority list: Before you being your day at work make a list of your priorities you expect to get done. Making a list will keep you organized and on top of things. It will feel good crossing things off and feeling accomplished after being gone those few months.
  2. Keep your expectations realistic: If you work an eight hour shift each day you should be breast pumping at least three times a day for about 20 minutes each time. This can be stressful if you have things you need to get done at work. Don’t be too hard on yourself and feel as if you need to get things done right away. To keep your stress levels low take one step at a time. It’s important you don’t forget about breast pumping, and make sure to put it in your priority list each day.
  3. Make healthier choices: Instead of ordering take out, pack yourself a salad or something a little healthier. It’s important to feed your body the nutrients it needs because while you’re breastfeeding, and taking care of a little one, you will need the extra energy. Instead of running to the vending machine, make sure you have snacks at your desk for the times when you get hungry. You’ll feel much better afterwards anyway, and guilt free by saying NO to the salty potato chips! (And if you don’t have one, make yourself a Pinterest account. You will be able to find thousands of healthy lunch and snack ideas for breastfeeding moms. There are yummy lactation recipes on there too.)
  4. Stay hydrated: Keep a few bottles of water in your desk as well. It’s important to drink plenty of water even if you’re not breastfeeding. Although the amount of liquid you take in won’t determine the amount of breast milk you produce, it’s still vital to drink when you are thirsty and keep up with supplying your body with the proper amount of fluids.
  5. NEVER skip pumps: Even if you’re tired, or if it’s just one of those days where it seems like you aren’t going to get everything done, NEVER skip your time to pump. If you want your body to become used to generating a certain amount of breast milk each day this is the most important rule to follow! Your milk supply can actually decrease if you are not ordering yourself to keep up with your pump plan. Pumping the same amount of milk each day will help with your stress, and take away the worry if whether or not you will produce enough milk for your baby.
  6. It’s okay to say no: With your busy schedule you can’t possibly take on everything you want to do. As long as it’s good for your company, and yourself, it’s okay to turn something down that isn’t on the top of your priority list. And if there is a work meeting that isn’t mandatory and it interferes with your pumping schedule, it’s okay to miss it. Ask one of your coworkers for a summary afterwards.
  7. Ask for help: Never be afraid to ask for help when you’re starting to feel overwhelmed. Talk to your supervisor about ways you can manage your time at work while you breast pump.

Now this will be the main thing to take away from this post: while you are breast pumping take a second, put the IPhone down, push aside the tablet, close your eyes for a minute and relax. This is a great time to pick up a good book or breathe for a minute during your busy schedule of being a new mommy. This isn’t just an important rule to follow for your health, but also an imperative part of producing, and maintaining the proper amount of milk for your baby. Research has shown women who actually take the time to rest produce more milk than those who are constantly running around!

When Will I Feel my Baby Move?

One of the most exciting moments of pregnancy is feeling your little one move within you. Not only does this reinforce the bond you have as mother and child, but it shows that your baby is continuing to develop. These little kicks, tumbles and jabs will become distinct as your pregnancy progresses but most movements will begin between 16 and 26 weeks. Although, some women with their second child claim they feel movement after only 13 weeks!

For first time mothers, these activities can be hard to distinguish from traditional bodily functions, especially towards the beginning of your pregnancy. Hunger pains and other internal tasks can feel very similar; but don’t worry. By your second and third semester, your little one will make sure to let you know they’re there! Their movements will become much more intense and frequent.

When Will I Feel my Baby Move?To help you along the way, we have created an easy guide to recognize your little one’s activity:

12th Week: Your growing child is probably beginning to move at this point! But, as they are still very small, you will most likely not begin to feel anything just yet.

16th Week: Around sixteen weeks women have claimed to feel tiny flutters! While there is a decent chance this is a regular bodily function, it just as well may by your little one moving around!

20th Week: This far into your child’s development you will probably start to feel more distinct fetal movements, which is better known as quickening.

24th Week: The movements within you are becoming more and more distinct and frequent. Additionally, you may occasionally feel your growing baby hiccup! This will feel like gentle twitching and is a cause for smiles.

28th Week: As your tummy and child grow bigger, their movements grow in strength and regularity. While this can be sudden and slightly painful, it is a sign of good health and progress!

36th Week: The larger your baby grows, the less room they will have in your uterus. This will slow down their movements until you have given birth and welcome them into the world.

These little kicks, tumbles and jabs will help bring you closer to the life growing within you. Enjoy every moment and, if you like, monitor them! Keep a tally or scrapbook and engage in motherhood in every way you can!

 

It is important to remember that fetal movements will grow more distinctive over time. Just because you cannot recognize them initially does not mean they are not occurring. However, it is always beneficial to set up appointments with your doctor and discuss your pregnancy!

Dads are notoriously hard to buy gifts for and rarely ask for any one item in particular. Why not thank your partner this year by detailing all of the specific ways he’s helped you while breastfeeding? Men generally report feeling removed from the breastfeeding schedule moms keep for their babies, and for understandable reasons most of the attention surrounding breastfeeding is attributed to the mom. Let your partner know that he’s a great dad and an essential part of your breastfeeding journey by thanking him for all of the times he’s brought you a snack while you nurse. Or let him know how much his encouragement kept you going when you had trouble getting the perfect latch in the beginning. Your baby’s health, care, and happiness are the most important goals you both share as parents, so let him know that he’s doing a great job keeping your family supported (like your favorite nursing bras!) this year.

Bottle feeding breast milk in the middle of the night, helping you figure out how your new breast pump works, laughing at your favorite television show together while you nurse—these are a few of the ways your partner has shared breastfeeding moments with you and your baby.
