Baby Bodybuilding Part 2: How to Help Your Baby Develop Muscles

Earlier this week we discussed the development of your baby’s gross motor skills and the importance of strong muscles to achieve these milestones.  Now that you have an understanding of how your baby’s muscles emerge, we’re moving on to some practical skills training for how to help your baby develop muscles.

First, we like to call it “baby bodybuilding” because it reminds us that we’re strengthening our babies and getting them ready to physically explore the world around them.  Lifting the head, moving the eyes, scooting around, bringing things to the mouth and all of the other amazing things your baby is learning to do helps her discover her surroundings and make deeper brain connections.  Much like adult bodybuilding, it’s actually pretty hard work for your little buddle of joy.  She may let you know that with a grunt or cry once in awhile.  Be sure to give lots of encouragement and love along the way.  Extra praise and cuddles are most definitely in order during strength building activities.  And certainly that fantastic breast milk of yours will give her the nutrients needed for her “workouts.”

Here are some of the best activities for how to help your baby develop muscles:

Freedom:  Beware of trapping and strapping your baby down too often.  Babies need the opportunity to explore and move about as they choose.  This freedom from strollers, cribs, swings and bouncy chairs will be your baby’s first gym floor.  Even if she cannot move very much or very far yet, she’ll feel the freedom and encouragement to do so when she’s ready.

Baby Bodybuilding Part 2:  How to Help Your Baby Develop MusclesTummy Time:  Babies now sleep on their backs (the safest way for babies to sleep) and spend less time on their stomachs where they have to learn to lift their head to view their environment.  Therefore, it’s your job as a parent to carve out tummy time where your little one can build neck, abdominal and back strength.  This is how she will learn to hold up her head on her own and eventually roll over.  Tummy time can be done in a variety of ways including on a play mat, yoga mat, your bed, a pillow or on your chest.  You can stimulate your baby by getting on the floor with her and enticing her with exciting toys of vibrant colors, textures and sounds.  Tummy time also helps your baby avoid having a flat head.

Baby Workout:  Take time each day, or several times a day, to move your baby’s body around for her.  Help her kick her legs up, open and in a bicycle motion.  Stretch her arms above her head and to the side.  Crunch her little body up for some mini sit-ups.  Clap her hands and feet together.  Make up a dance with multiple movements.  Bounce her on your legs.  This fun routine will help strengthen her muscles and you’ll probably get a few giggles too.  Try getting in a “workout” on the changing table each time you change a diaper.

Help Her Try New Things:  Some babies dive in to new adventures head first – literally!  Others are a little more cautious.  Hold your baby’s hand or give her a push when she’s trying a new activity to show her that she can indeed do it.  Sometimes this boost is all the confidence she needs to try it on her own.

Baby Massage:  Just like every good athlete, a soothing massage is in order after a workout.  Babies love massages and it can trigger some strong muscle development too.  Additionally, massages are comforting and relaxing to babies and make them feel warm and loved, which of course they are.  Try a baby massage before bedtime to get your baby in a calm state for sleep.

Tasting the World:  It may make germaphobic parents across the globe cringe but babies explore with their mouths.  And the act of bringing something to the mouth is great for their gross motor skills.  Scooting, crawling or walking to find something to put in their mouths is even better yet.  Ensure your baby has plenty of safe and sanitary items to put in her mouth and that she doesn’t miss the opportunity by always sucking on a pacifier.

Be Physically Active:  Kids need to be active.  Encouraging physical activity from a young age is one of the best ways to keep kids healthy and to avoid the epidemic of obesity.  Health professionals recommend at least one hour of physical activity per day for children.  Start the habit now for your baby’s strong and healthy future.

Baby Bodybuilding Part 1: The Development of Gross Motor Skills

You probably love the tender, softness of your marshmellowy baby.  She’s undeniably hard to resist.  However, muscle development is an essential part of reaching physical milestones.  Babies are born with no muscle strength or control but they develop these vital skills over time.  The major muscle coordinating activities are known as gross motor skills and your pediatrician will be looking out for them at each checkup during your baby’s first few years.  Today we’re discussing the importance of helping your baby develop muscles to perform gross motor skills.

Baby Bodybuilding Part 1:  The Development of Gross Motor SkillsAt birth, babies can only rely on reflexes, like that of suckling and swallowing during breastfeeding.  During the first few months of life, babies are strong enough to hold up their own heads using neck strength, and follow objects with their eyes, which require optical muscle coordination.  From there, babies start to gain more control over their arms and legs that were once flailing without rhyme or reason.  They can reach for objects, begin putting food (and other objects) in their mouth and kick things intentionally with their feet.  They begin to roll over from their stomach to their back and eventually from their back to their stomach again.

Around the midpoint of the first year, babies begin working on advanced skills such as sitting upright, slithering, crawling, baring weight on their legs and pulling up on objects.  Usually around the first year – although sometimes earlier and sometimes later – babies’ muscles are strong enough to start walking.  Most start off teetering or toddling, hence the name toddler.  But in no time, your budding walker will surely be sprinting around faster than you can keep up with her.

While these gross motor skills develop differently for each child, there are developmental milestones set forth as guidelines to ensure your baby is on target.  If your baby is not meeting milestones, you should talk to your pediatrician.  You may just have a late bloomer or these may be signs of developmental problems.

A somewhat common issue is hypotonia, which is simply low muscle tone.  Babies with hypotonia may feel limp or floppy, sort of like a rag doll.  This type of muscle weakness can cause delayed gross motor skills and lack of coordination.  Usually children grow out of hypotonia however they may always lag behind in physical activities.  Some parents opt for physical therapy to help babies and young children strengthen their muscles.  This still may not make them a star athlete but it can help them gain some skills to keep up with their peers.  More severe, long-term hypotonia may be related to serious conditions such as muscular dystrophy, Tay-Sachs, cerebral palsy, Prader-Willi syndrome or other genetic disorders.  Major concerns should be addressed with your pediatrician immediately.

The best thing you can do to help strengthen your baby’s muscles is to give her every opportunity to use them in ways that are age appropriate.  Later this week we’ll be sharing some activities and baby “bodybuilding exercises” you can do with your baby.  Don’t worry, your baby won’t break a sweat or need a protein shake afterwards…well, except for maybe that great protein-packed breast milk you provide.

Spring Cleaning a Healthy Home

Today marks the first day of spring!  With budding flowers, longer days and outdoor fun comes another seasonal activity:  Spring Cleaning.  If you’ve just rolled your eyes at the thought of all of the household chores you need to do, adopt a new perspective on your spring cleaning responsibilities.  Cleaning your home can make it a healthier and safer place for you and your family.  If you are pregnant or have a baby, this is especially important.

Today we’re reviewing tips and reminders for spring cleaning for a healthy home:

Spring Cleaning a Healthy HomeUse Natural or “Green” Cleaning Products.  Many cleaning solvents contain dangerous chemicals.  While these toxins may do the trick in sanitizing your surfaces, they could actually do more harm than good when you or your baby ingests such chemicals.  Look for plant-based products such as those made from tree, fruit or nut oils, are biodegradable, pH neutral, contain baking soda and are listed as natural or organic.  Avoid petroleum-based products or anything with a harsh odor.  You can also concoct your own natural cleanser using some simple household ingredients.

Remove Dust and Allergens by Thoroughly Dusting and Cleaning Airways.  Dusting with a feather duster only spreads allergens through the air.  Instead use a damp cloth that will attract dust.  Rinse your cloth periodically while cleaning to avoid spreading dust from surface-to-surface.  Also clean out air conditioning filters, ducts, vents and window treatments where air can blow particles around your house.  Replace parts that are worn or not well-sealed.

Use a High-Efficiency Particulate Air-Filtered (HEPA) Vacuum or Steam Cleaner.  Regular vacuums releases many of the dirt and allergens that it sucks up.  A HEPA vacuum is sealed and keeps contaminants inside.  Find one that is easy to dump or change bags.  Alternatively, use a steam cleaner to suck up and sanitize floors, especially hard woods, tile or other non-carpeted surfaces.

Remove Toxic Substances from your Cabinets, Garage and Medicine Chest.  There is no reason to keep toxic materials lying around your house if you are not using them.  Find an appropriate waste removal facility to discard these items.  If you need them, store them in very high, out of reach places and lock the doors.  Do not leave them out in your garage, kitchen or laundry room cabinets.  Similarly, dispose of old medications and be sure current medicines, even over-the-counter varieties, are locked safely away.

Remove Mold and Mildew from around Your House.  Mold and mildew are a fungus that grows in damp spaces.  You may find it near sinks, bathtubs and showers.  Be sure to clean these spaces thoroughly.  Also check for leaky pipes, cracks or standing puddles of water.  This is a breeding ground for mold and mildew that may not only be harmful to the body, but also wreak havoc on the walls and floors of your home.

Sanitize Stuffed Animals and Linens.  Favorite stuffed toys, loveys and blankies that are dragged around your house and outdoors can be infested with germs.  Spring is a great time to wash all of these items in hot water and a natural detergent.  For items that cannot be washed, freeze them for 24-hours.  Be sure to wash comforters, throw pillows and other linens that you may not toss in your washing machine on a regular basis.

Ensure Safety Measures are in Place.  Check all of the batteries on your smoke detectors and make sure your carbon monoxide detector is also in working order.  Ensure gates are secured tightly on stairs and other areas that are off-limits to your baby.  Place safety covers on electrical outlets and secure long cords.  Put no slip mats beneath rugs and around the bathtub.

Celebrating Your Baby Bump:  How to Memorialize your PregnancyPregnancy should be a time of excitement and celebration.  Although some weird things may be happening to your body, hopefully they don’t overshadow the amazing miracle of carrying a baby.  Whether you’re having your first or your fourth, celebrating your baby bump is certainly in order.  Today we’re sharing some sweet, sassy, fun and funny ways to memorialize your pregnancy.

Progressive Series of Belly Photos:  There are many ways of celebrating your baby bump through photography.  You, your partner and eventually your child will love looking back at these photos and watching your belly grow month-by-month.  Someone can help you take your progressive series or you can take a selfie in the mirror.  Be sure to get a side view and pose in a similar fashion each time to note the changes.  You can use props to mark the monthly progression, such as belly stickers, a chalkboard, blocks, your fingers or ultrasound photos.

Professional Pregnancy Photos:  You may also want to invest in a professional photo session during pregnancy to really capture your beautiful belly and glowing aura.  You can do this alone or with your partner and other children.  You’ll want to emphasize your belly with cupped hands, heart fingers and other loving gestures towards the little love growing inside you.  For a funny take, you can use an empty picture frame and let your belly punch through.  Or some women opt for a more sensual nude or semi-nude photo session to memorialize their pregnancy.  You can also take the middle ground, such as rockin’ a bikini, baby bump and all.

Cast Your Belly:  You don’t have to be a great sculptor to create a cast of your belly for eternity.  You can buy easy-to-use kits with all of the supplies.  A word of caution though – you may want to involve someone to help you to ensure you cover your entire belly and can get the cast off when you’re done.

Belly Art:  Using non-toxic body paint, you can have an artist (amateur or professional) paint a beautiful scene on your bump.   Although temporary, the artwork can be rather exquisite and a great way to memorialize your pregnancy in a highly artistic fashion.  If you have older children, you can also let them paint your belly for a fun, bonding activity with their new sibling.

Bump to Bump:  If you have a sister, cousin or best friend who’s pregnant at the same time as you, be sure to get some bump pics together.  A fun way to do this is to bump bellies.  Better yet, bump exposed bellies with baby faces on them as a first sign of friendship between your growing babies.

Henna Tattoo:  100% pure henna is considered safe to use during pregnancy…and there are no needles involved!  Much like belly art, you can have your bump tattooed with henna ink in a stunning pattern.  This Middle Eastern traditional form of art makes a gorgeous natural and creative way of celebrating your baby bump.

New Study Examines Aspects of Babies Social Awareness

Throughout decades of research, studies indicate that even during infancy, human beings are social creatures.  That includes having social awareness.  A new study from the University of Missouri shows that 13-month old babies understand social dynamics and are aware of perspective.

Previous research proves that babies prefer “nice” people who do kind things over “mean” people who are unkind or unpleasant.  And it has been shown that babies feel sorry for those who are the victims of unkind people.  A new study takes these findings a step further to discover what expectations babies have when someone does something wrong or witnesses another person doing something bad.

New Study Examines Aspects of Babies Social Awareness

The project showed 48 13-month old babies a series of puppet sketches where one character would hit another, first by themselves and then in the presence of another character.  The babies showed concern for the wounded puppet but, when the third character re-entered without having witnessed the violence, they didn’t expect him to know about it.  Conversely, when the third character was present, they expected him to do something about the situation and not want to play with the bully.  In another scene, one character hit another unintentionally, which the babies seemed to understand was an accident and didn’t have an expectation of how the character should be treated.

Reactions were gauged by how long the babies focused on the scenes and characters.  This form of measurement was used because babies tend to stare longer when something is askew than when everything seems normal to them.

The findings show that babies are not only aware when someone is being a bully or a victim, but also how they should be treated and punished for their actions.  Additionally, it shows an understanding of perspective called the “theory of mind,” which previously was believed to develop the later stage of socialization in preschool.  This theory purports that babies wouldn’t expect someone to know something if they hadn’t seen it themselves.  Babies can remove their own knowledge of the situation and think about what another person may or may not know.

This amazing research was published in January in Psychological Science and was reported by LiveScience.  While babies may be lacking social skills in many ways, we now know they have an incredible awareness of complex and intense social interactions.  This will serve them well as they continue to develop into social beings, learn how to treat others with respect, begin to follow social norms and evolve into well adjusted people.

When to Pump and Dump

Moms often use the term “pump and dump” to describe the process of pumping breast milk and discarding it.  Moms do this for a variety of reasons and today we’re discussing appropriate times to pump and dump, and some myths that lead mothers to do it unnecessarily.  After all, many new moms consider breast milk to be precious liquid that should be treasured so every ounce can be savored for the benefit of their babies.

The most common myth about when to pump and dump is regarding alcohol consumption.  As you know, everything you eat and drink enters your breast milk, just as it does your bloodstream.  Therefore, if you drink alcohol, your breast milk will have traces of alcohol in it.  Here’s where many moms are misinformed:  pumping breast milk does not remove the alcohol.  Alcohol takes time to break down and leave your system and waiting it out is the only way to eliminate it from your breast milk as well.  How much time is based on how much alcohol you drank and your body size.

When to Pump and DumpWith that said, many moms pump and dump after drinking alcohol when they know they will miss a feeding with their baby and need to express the milk.  Moms may pump because they don’t want to become engorged or don’t want to discourage milk production at that time.  Because the milk will have remnants of alcohol, it should be discarded.  Therefore, pumping and dumping may be wise after having a few cocktails, but not to pump away the alcohol.

There are other times when it may be useful to pump and dump as well.  Like alcohol, some prescription medications may be unsafe for your baby to consume, even in the small amounts that enter breast milk.  If you have to take a temporary course of medication that may be harmful to your baby, pump and dump during this time to keep your milk supply strong.  Try to pump enough milk in advance to ensure your baby has plenty of breast milk during that period.

Some medical testing may also require you to pump and dump for a short time.  The radioactive iodine uptake scan to diagnose hyperthyroidism is one such case.  It is necessary to pump and dump after this test until all radioactive materials have been eliminated from your body.

Pumping and dumping is also smart when you’re unable to verify the sanitation of your breast milk.  For instance, if you are pumping while away from your child but find yourself in a contaminated environment, play it safe and discard the milk.  Similarly, if you have eaten something that is questionable, you have consumed excessive caffeine or you indulged in a food that you know hurts your baby’s stomach, go ahead and pump and dump for your baby’s sake.  Also, breast milk should be refrigerated within 4-6 hours of pumping.  Otherwise it will spoil.  If you cannot store your breast milk properly within this time frame, pump and dump.

The bottom line about when to pump and dump is that the method should not be used for the purpose of rapidly removing toxic or potentially harmful substances from your breast milk.  Only time can cleanse breast milk.  However, pumping and dumping is helpful to avoid engorgement and to ensure milk supply is steady and strong.

The Science Behind Breastfeeding: How Milk Production Works

Breastfeeding is a pretty amazing phenomenon.  It has been sustaining the lives of humans and other mammals for thousands of years.  But do you know how breast milk production works?  With some help from our friends at Kellymom.com, today we’re exploring the science behind breastfeeding – how you biologically produce that incredible breast milk that is so nourishing and beneficial to both your baby and yourself.

The process of lactation actually begins during pregnancy, as early as the second trimester in fact.  At this early stage, lactation is driven by hormones controlled by the endocrine system.  In the second trimester, lactogenisis begins, which is the initial internal production of colostrum.  Colostrum is the super-charged thick milky fluid first excreted by the mammary glands after birth.  But this colostrum remains in the body due to the high presence of progesterone during pregnancy.  After a baby is born, hormone levels, including progesterone and estrogen, drop significantly promoting the first secretion of colostrum.  Additionally, a hormone called prolactin encourages milk synthesis.  This second stage of lactogenisis usually begins within 2 days after giving birth, but breasts usually don’t feel full of milk until 2 to 3 days postpartum.

The Science Behind Breastfeeding:  How Milk Production WorksAfter the first few days, milk synthesis becomes less dependant on hormones and more controlled by the baby itself.  This is called autocrine control at the local level, that is, the breast.  Lactation is now based on the amount of milk a baby needs, and it’s all about supply and demand.  As the breast empties, it triggers production of more milk.  Usually a baby consumes about 80% of the breast milk a mother produces in a day, leaving 20% in her breast.  As milk is extracted, milk synthesis speeds up.  La Leche League likens this process to an automatic ice maker.  As the ice bin empties, the machine knows to make more ice to fill it back up to the top.  This process can continue indefinitely as long as milk removal continues to occur.

On a scientific level, milk cells called lactocytes are found on small cavities in the beast called alveoli.  Lactocytes carry prolactin receptors that encourage prolactin to flow through the bloodstream and stimulate the production of breast milk.  As milk fills the alveolus, the prolactin receptors are closed off due to expansion and signal a decrease in milk synthesis.  As the alveolus contract when milk is removed from the breast, prolactin receptors let the body know to produce milk again.  When breasts are filled and emptied frequently in the first few weeks after giving birth, prolactin receptors increase allowing the breast to produce and hold more milk throughout breastfeeding.

An understanding of milk synthesis is helpful when trying to increase milk supply.  Science tells us that emptying the breast more often throughout the day – whether that is through breastfeeding or pumping – will encourage more milk production.  Oxytocin is the hormone that controls let downs.  As the breast is stimulated, oxytocin typically kicks in within a minute to give a big release of breast milk.  Usually moms have more milk early in the day and less as the evening comes around.  However, we know that breast milk is changing constantly to meet the needs of the baby and this includes throughout the day.  Breast milk later in the day tends to have more fat, which helps babies sleep longer through the night and need less nighttime feedings.

When you’re cuddling your baby in your arms during feedings, breastfeeding may feel like a miracle. In truth, it is one of the miracles of human nature.  And while science is still trying to understand all of the elements involved, mothers and babies continue to benefit from this incredible biological phenomenon.
