Benefits of Breastfeeding: Benefits for Moms

The benefits of breastfeeding are numerous.  Breastfeeding gives our babies a healthy start in life, and it gives mothers many health benefits as well.  Studies are overwhelmingly positive about the direct physical and emotional benefits moms get from breastfeeding.

Breastfeeding is linked to lowered risk of breast cancer, ovarian cancer, uterine cancer, cardiovascular disease, Type II Diabetes and osteoporosis.  Skin-to-skin contact from breastfeeding produces the “closeness hormone” oxytocin, which promotes emotional health and reduces post-partum depression.  Breastfeeding mothers also tend to return to their pre-baby weight faster.

Happy Mommy & BabyThere are also many indirect benefits of breastfeeding.  Because a nursing mother’s baby has a stronger immune system, the entire family is likely to get sick less.  Being sick less often saves families, and society, a great deal of money over the course of the family’s lifetime.  Speaking of money, breastfeeding is also a more economical option overall!

 

Breastfeeding is a gift to your child and yourself.  Take the time to relax and enjoy your healthy breastfeeding habit.  It is one addiction all doctors recommend!

Introducing Solids

My baby is growing up and we are now introducing solids!  In addition to breastfeeding, we recently started Taylor on rice cereal and a few vegetables per our pediatrician’s recommendation.  We weren’t sure how she would react to us introducing solids, and determining the exact amount of food she needs in conjunction with breastfeeding has been trial and error.  We certainly didn’t want to stuff her with solids to the point she didn’t want to breast milk.

At first we tried mostly vegetables because we heard that if you start a baby on fruit, she may only develop a taste for sweet things.  For Taylor, it didn’t matter.  She seems to eat anything we put in front of her!  Let’s hope she stays that way and isn’t a picky eater!

As with every stage of breastfeeding, I know my milk will change and adapt to Taylor’s needs.  In the short term, there may be a surplus of milk that I may need to pump and store until my body acclimates to the change.

I found some great information online about breastfeeding and introducing solids, especially on how to balance daily intake.  While you and your baby will ultimately determine what works best for you both, you can also consult your pediatrician and lactation consultant to get a customized recommendation.

Whether it’s breast milk or solids, enjoy this time with your little one because they grow up so quickly!

How to Increase Milk Supply and Breastfeeding Let Downs

All new moms have questions and Loving Moments is here to help!

Q:  Can you tell me how to increase milk supply?  I’m not feeling a breastfeeding let down and I’m worried my milk supply is low.

BreastfeedingA:  Not feeling a breastfeeding let down is quite common and many new moms have this same concern!  Feeling a let down does not necessarily mean you have less than enough milk.  Some moms report no sensation while breastfeeding, and others get a tingly feeling as milk fills the breast.  That is what we call a let down.

The biggest factor in milk supply is your baby.  You want to make sure you hear swallowing and gulping while nursing, and your baby should seem content afterwards.  You can also determine how well your baby is nursing if you are changing plenty of wet and dirty diapers and he is gaining weight properly.  If you can confirm all of these things, you are having let downs than you may not feel.

The best advice I can give on how to increase milk supply is to breastfeed!  Do it often and on demand.  Your body adapts along with your baby.  You will sync up in no time!

World Breastfeeding Week

Danah and TaylorToday begins World Breastfeeding Week and National Breastfeeding Month.  Breastfeeding has been such an amazing experience for me and Taylor, and now I feel proudly connected to moms across the country and the world who have shared this incredible bond.  No matter what culture, country or continent we live in, breastfeeding is a universal way that women nurture their babies and give them the best possible nutrition for their growing bodies and brains.  I feel so lucky to be part of this “club” and to celebrate breastfeeding this week and month.

To show our support and raise awareness for the benefits of breastfeeding during World Breastfeeding Week and National Breastfeeding Month, Leading Lady and Loving Moments are partnering with The Best for Babes ® Foundation and Breastfeeding USA on a fitness challenge called Team “We’ve Got Your Back Babe.”  The team encourages moms to set their own personal fitness goals – whether it is biking, hiking, swimming or (my favorite, of course) golfing – and achieve them along with a local or virtual team.  Leading Lady is the presenting sponsor of this initiative and is donating hundreds of nursing bras to the 34 chapters of Breastfeeding USA nationwide.

Team “We’ve Got Your Back Babe” was created to help bring attention to breastfeeding benefits and challenges, while helping moms get back into shape after having babies.  I’m supporting the team because I can relate to both of these goals!

Everyone needs a champion when it comes to breastfeeding.  Just like sports, it’s a skill that takes a little practice and coaching.  Luckily, we moms come by this skill very naturally, but we have to rely on resources, lactation consultants and experienced moms to help is stay on track.  Loving Moments by Leading Lady has been that incredible champion for me, from their online breastfeeding resources, to their fantastic nursing bras.

I also know what it’s like to work hard to get back in shape after having a baby.  As a professional athlete, my career relies on me to be at my peak physical condition.  I was able to find ways to incorporate Taylor in my exercise routines, which allowed us to spend more time together and for me to have fun work-outs.  I hope Team “We’ve Got Your Back Babe” encourages other moms to do the same.
